Abstract
Many studies that perform structural simulations of bones using the finite element method consider bone tissue to be an isotropic material, however this is an orthotropic material according to the literature. The present work makes a comparison between these two mechanical behaviors, in order to analyze whether it is feasible to use this type of approach, taking into account the displacement parameters of the systems and the duration of the simulation. For this, a coronal fracture of the femoral condyle is used, which was fixed using 2 cancellous screws and a straight DCP type plate using 4 screws on the lateral face of the distal femur. It was observed that the results of displacements did not have great variations between isotropic and orthotropic bone, with the exception of displacements of cancellous screws, where there was a significant difference of 106.7% and 135.1%. So it is indicated that isotropic mechanical properties are used only for initial results. For the final conclusions, it is more appropriate to consider bone as an orthotropic material, even if it prolongs the simulation time, making sure that there is not a very high difference in the results, as this would end up escaping reality.
