Abstract
The Finite Element Method (FEM) is a numerical procedure for determining approximate solutions of value problems on the boundary of differential equations. The FEM is a widely used tool to simulate efforts in mechanical components, and to optimize their design. Due to the precision errors of the FEM, it is customary to compare its results with the analytical method. Within this context, this study aimed to carry out an analysis of the stresses and consequent maximum deflections in a linear motion guide system, which integrates a computerized numerical command (CNC) coordinate table. For that, a comparison between analysis methods was performed, considering four different scenarios: fine-mesh and coarse-mesh stress analysis and fine-mesh and coarse-mesh strain analysis. The FEM was applied using the commercial software ABAQUS, considering the referred structural component to be a beam of the double-supported type. The results obtained show that the evaluated scenarios differ in load distribution along the linear guide, and also in the mesh refinement in the software simulation environment. The analytical solution showed the lowest stress and strain values. The FEM showed differences in stress values of 6%, and for deformation it generated differences of up to 25% compared to the analytical solution, since the latter does not consider the existing holes and geometries of the beam studied.
