Abstract
Two-phase flows are present in several industrial applications, such as power generation in thermal power plants and oil production. In the latter sector, gas-liquid flow is observed in several stages, including oil extraction (gaslift), refining, and effluent treatment process. The injection of small air bubbles is part of flotation process, a common practice in the removal of oil present in small concentrations in emulsions with water (O/W). Several studies in the literature indicate that the separation process of oil-in-water emulsions is affected by the distribution of air bubble diameters. The present work presents a technique for characterizing the diameter and velocity of air bubbles in a stagnant liquid medium (water), which can be applied to the characterization of bubbles in internal flows. This method is based on image analysis, through code developed using MATLAB software. Images of air bubbles flowing in a stagnant liquid medium (water) were obtained using a high speed camera, model Phantom v2012. The images were processed for bubble detection using circumference tracking techniques and noise cleaning. Based on the coordinates of bubble centers, it was possible to obtain their velocities over time. The technique proved to be effective in different flow conditions, detecting overlapping bubbles and eliminating false-positive results. Finally, the bubble diameter distribution, the evolution of their velocities, and the influence of the air volume flow rate on the two properties will be obtained.
