 Title:
THE USE OF PENDULAR SCRATCH TEST FOR STUDYING CUTTING FLUIDS PERFORMANCE

Summary :
ABSTRACT. SCRATCH TEST TECHNIQUE WAS DEVELOPED WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF SIMULATING THE ABRASIVE WEAR. IN THIS TECHNIQUE, THE ISOLATED ABRASIVE PARTICLES ARE ASSIMILATED TO A HARD, SIMPLE GEOMETRY INDENTER THAT WILL SCRATCH OUT POLISHED SURFACES. THESE CONDITIONS, ALTHOUGH IDEALIZED, ALLOW THE USE OF SIMPLE MODELS THAT COULD CONTRIBUTE TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF FUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS OF THE ABRASIVE PROCESS. THIS TECHNIQUE WERE USED IN THIS WORK BY MAKING RISKS IN STEEL WORKPIECES SURFACES SUBMERGED IN SEVERAL CUTTING FLUIDS WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF CLASSIFYING THEM REGARDING TO ITS SIMULTANEOUS COOLANT AND LUBRICANT QUALITIES AND EVALUATING THE POSSIBILITY OF TRANSFERING THE RESULTS TO THE MACHINING PROCESSES. THE SPECIFIC ENERGY NEEDED TO SCRATCH OUT WORKPIECES OF ABNT NB 8640 STEEL IS EVALUATED UNDER SEVERAL LUBRICATION CONDITIONS. A MODIFIED UPSALA S PENDULUM, PRODUCING AN IMPACT ENERGY OF 19J WAS USED. THE EXPERIMENTAL TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT WITH THE FOLLOWING FLUIDS: SOLUBLE OIL, SYNTHETIC (2 TYPES), IN THE CONCENTRATION OF 5%, AND A NEAT MINERAL OIL. DRY CONDITION AND WATER WERE ALSO TESTED FOR COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS. THE NEAT MINERAL OIL PRESENTED THE LOWER SCRATCHING SPECIFIC ENERGY WHILE HIGHEST WAS FOUND FOR WATER. KEYWORDS: PENDULAR SCRATCH TEST, CUTTING FLUIDS, SPECIFIC ENERGY.
