ABSTRACT. FIRE RESISTANT STEELS, CAPABLE OF RESISTING TO TYPICAL TEMPERATURES OF FIRE BLAZES WITHOUT GREAT LOSS OF MECHANICAL RESISTANCE, HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED AND STUDIED RECENTLY. THE PRESENT WORK EVALUATES THE EFFECT OF CHEMICAL COMPOSITION ON THE MICROSTRUCTURE AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF WELD METALS DEVELOPED TO BE USED WITH THIS STEEL. MULTI PASS SUBMERGED ARC WELDING WAS PERFORMED WITH THREE METAL CORED WIRES RESULTING IN DIFFERENT LEVELS OF MN, SI, CR, CU AND MO IN THE WELD METAL. SAMPLES WERE TAKEN FROM THE WELD BEAD FOR METALLOGRAPHIC EXAMINATION, HARDNESS AND TENSION TESTING. ELEVATED TEMPERATURE TENSION TESTS WERE PEFORMED AT TEMPERATURES UP TO 600OC. METALLOGRAPHIC EXAMINATIONS AND TENSION TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT AT ROOM TEMPERATURE FOR THE AS-DEPOSITED WELD METAL AND AFTER BEENING EXPOSED TO TEMPERATURES UP TO 800OC SIMULATING TYPICAL FIRE CONDITIONS. QUANTITATIVE METALLOGRAPHY WAS DONE IN COLUMNAR REGIONS OF THE AS-DEPOSITED WELD METAL.
