 Title:
POROUS WICK QUALIFICATION FOR CAPILLARY PUMP APPLICATION

Summary :
IN THIS WORK THE MICROSTRUCTURE CHARACTERIZATION OF TUBULAR WICKS FOR CAPILLARY PUMP APPLICATION IS DISCUSSED. THE POROSITY, THE PORE SIZE DISTRIBUTION AND THE ORDERING OF THESE PORES IN THE MICROSTRUCTURE IS ANALYZED. AN IMAGE ANALYSIS TECHNIQUE AND THE MERCURY INTRUSION POROSIMETRY (MIP) TECHNIQUE ARE USED TO CHARACTERIZE THE WICK. THE IMAGE ANALYSIS TECHNIQUE IS USED TO DETERMINE THE PORE SIZE DISTRIBUTION IN 2-D BINARY IMAGES. THE MIP TECHNIQUE IS USED TO DETERMINE THE BREAKTHROUGH DIAMETER, AS THE CRITICAL DIAMETER RELATED TO THE CAPILLARY PUMPING LIMIT OF THE WICK. PRELIMINARY TESTING HAVE DEMONSTRATED A SATISFACTORY PERFORMANCE OF THE WICK IN A TWO-PHASE HEAT TRANSFER LOOP. KEY WORDS: WICK, CAPILLARY PUMP, MICROSTRUCTURE CHARACTERIZATION.
