ABSTRACT. IN 1995, A NEW POST-GRADUATION COURSE CALLED PROFESSIONAL MASTER HAD ITS REGULATION SET BY CAPES BUT ONLY NOW IT IS BEING SET UP MORE CONSISTENTLY BY THE UNIVERSITIES IN BRAZIL. THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THIS COURSE REPRESENTS ANOTHER MOVE AIMED AT CLOSING THE GAP BETWEEN UNIVERSITIES AND CORPORATIONS. HENCE, THE APPROPRIATE FORUM FOR DISCUSSION BECOMES MARKED BY DIFFERENT FINAL GOALS (PROFIT VERSUS KNOWLEDGE). IT TRANSPIRES THAT DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEWS ARISE REGARDING TOPICS AS CURRICULA, FINAL YEAR PROJECTS AND STUDENTS PERFORMANCE. ALTHOUGH IT HAS BEEN TRIED A MORE HARMONIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN UNIVERSITIES AND CORPORATIONS, IT TURNS OUT THAT A MORE CONSISTENT THEORETICAL APPROACH IS NECESSARY IN ORDER TO PRESERVE THESE INSTITUTIONS FROM THEIR VALUES, LETTING ASIDE POLEMICS AND TURNING THEM MORE SCIENTIFIC. THIS ARTICLE AIMS AT TO APPROACH THIS PROBLEM FROM A HISTORICAL POINT OF VIEW, USING AS A BACKGROUND THE SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL POLICIES OF GERMANY AND UNITED STATES IN THEIR GENESIS, TRACING BRIEFLY THE HISTORY OF C&T AND THE UNIVERSITY STUDIES IN BRAZIL. BASED ON THESE ELEMENTS, WE STRESS THE NECESSITY OF APPROACHING THE PROBLEM FROM A STRONGER THEORETICAL BASE RATHER THAN ADOPTING PRAGMATIC SOLUTIONS.
