 Title:
SUPERCRITICAL FLUID DISCHARGE IN PIPELINES

Summary :
THE NEED TO OVERCOME LARGE DISTANCES IN THE TRANSPORT OF GASES BETWEEN SUPPLIER AND CONSUMER UNITS IMPOSES THE USE OF HIGH LEVELS OF PRESSURE, SOMETIMES HIGHER THAN THE FLUID CRITICAL PRESSURE. MANY ACCIDENTS IN DUCTS OR COMPONENTS PRESENT IN LINES HAPPEN DUE TO THESE SEVERE PRESSURE CONDITIONS. IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT INVOLVING THE RELEASE OF A DANGEROUS SUBSTANCE, FROM THE RISK ANALYSIS POINT OF VIEW, THERE IS A NEED TO DETERMINE THE DISCHARGE RATE AND THE CONDITIONS (TEMPERATURE AND LIQUID/VAPOR RATIO) OF THE ESCAPING MATERIAL IN ORDER TO EVALUATE THE CONSEQUENCES. IN THIS WORK, THE RUPTURE OF A PIPELINE INITIALLY AT A SUPERCRITICAL PRESSURE IS MODELED FOR THE CALCULATION OF MASS FLOW, TEMPERATURE, AND PRESSURE AS A FUNCTION OF SPACE AND TIME, AS THE MATERIAL IS RELEASED TO THE ATMOSPHERE. ALSO, IT IS PRESENTED A DISCUSSION OF THE USE OF A THERMODYNAMIC EQUATION OF STATE FOR THE EVALUATION OF PHYSICAL PROPERTIES AND ITS INFLUENCE IN THE RESULTS. VALUES FOR CALCULATION RESULTS FOR BOTH TRANSIENT AND STATIONARY CASES ARE PRESENTED FOR SEVERAL DISTANCES BETWEEN SUPPLY UNIT AND RUPTURE POINT, FOR THE A TYPICAL REALISTIC CASE OF INITIAL CONDITIONS (PO = 10,13 MPA AND TO = 298,15 K). KEY WORDS: TWO-PHASE FLOW, CRITICAL FLOW, CHOKED FLOW.
