 Title:
A COMPUTER BASED TOOL FOR DIMENSIONAL TOLERANCE ATTRIBUTION OF MECHANICAL PARTS

Summary :
ABSTRACT. THE DIMENSIONAL TOLERANCE ATTRIBUTION FOR MECHANICAL PARTS IS A TYPICAL TASK OF THE CONCEPTUAL PHASE OF THE PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PROCESS. FREQUENTLY THIS TASK IS CARRIED OUT WITHOUT ANY INTERACTION WITH THE MANUFACTURING DEPARTMENT. AS A CONSEQUENCE, THE PRODUCT DESIGNERS TEND TO SET DIMENSIONAL TOLERANCES TIGHTER THAN THEY SHOULD BE OR WHICH ARE BEYOND THE ACTUAL COMPANY CAPABILITY TO ATTAIN THEM. THIS IMPLIES ADDITIONAL COSTS AND DELAYS IN THE PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT CYCLE. THIS PAPER PRESENTS NA EFFICIENT, COMPUTER BASED, MEAN OF BRINGING IN TO THE DESIGNERS AT THE CONCEPTUAL PHASE, THE INFORMATION FROM THE MANUFACTURING AREA WHICH IS NECESSARY FOR ATTRIBUTION OF TOLERANCES IN AN OPTIMISED FASHION.THE COMPUTER BASED PROGRAM IS CONSTITUTED BY A SET OF PROCEDURES BASED ON TECHNICAL STANDARDS AND ON THE ACTUAL CAPABILITIES OF THE MACHINES PRESENT IN THE COMPANY PLANT FLOOR. THE COMPUTER PROGRAM IS WRITTEN IN VISUAL BASIC AND HAS A USER FRIENDLY INTERFACE; ANOTHER IMPORTANT FEATURE IS ITS INTEGRATION WITH A VERY POPULAR CAD SOFTWARE, NAMELY AUTOCAD. THE CONTRIBUTION HEREIN PRESENTED IS THE DESIGN FOR TOLERANCING TOOL, WHICH MAY BE ADDED TO THE SET OF TECHNOLOGY INFORMATION TOOLS WHICH ACT AS THE IMPLEMENTATION SIDE OF THE INTEGRATED PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT CONCEPT. KEYWORDS: DIMENSIONAL TOLERANCES, DESIGN FOR TOLERANCE, CONCURRENT ENGINEERING.
