 Title:
WEAR OF ABNT 1045 STEEL TOOLS USED IN ABRASIVE ULTRASONIC MACHINING

Summary :
THE AIM OF THIS WORK WAS TO EVALUATE THE INFLUENCE OF MICROSTRUCTURE VARIATIONS AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIAL USED IN TOOLS FOR ABRASIVE ULTRASONIC MACHINING ON THEIR WEAR RESISTANCE. IN THIS WAY, ABNT 1045 STEEL TOOLS WERE PRODUCED IN THREE DIFFERENT CONDITIONS: WORK-HARDENED, ANNEALED AND NORMALIZED. THE WORK-HARDENED CONDITION CORRESPONDS TO THE MATERIAL AS RECEIVED. THE ANNEALED AND NORMALIZED CONDITIONS WERE OBTAINED BY HEAT TREATMENTS. THE MACHINING PARAMETERS WERE KEPT CONSTANT AND SODIUM-CALCIUM GLASS WAS MACHINED. THE RESULTS EVIDENCED WORK HARDENING IN THE ANNEALED AND NORMALIZED TOOLS. IN THE AS-RECEIVED TOOL, THERE WAS ADDITIONAL WORK HARDENING. THE WORK HARDENING WAS RESTRICTED TO THE REGION OF CONTACT BETWEEN TOOL AND ABRASIVE/GLASS INTERFACE. THE HAMMERING OF THE TOOL UPON THE ABRASIVE PROMOTES WEAR IN THE GLASS. THE TOOL IS SUBJECT TO PLASTIC DEFORMATION, WORK HARDENING, MICROFRACTURE AND WEAR. THE TOOL PRODUCED WITH THE AS-RECEIVED MATERIAL PRESENTED THE BEST WEAR RESISTANCE BECAUSE IT HAS THE HIGHEST HARDNESS, ASSOCIATED TO A RELATIVELY GOOD TOUGHNESS. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE HEAT TREATMENTS ARE NOT A RECOMMENDABLE PRACTICE TO PRODUCE TOOLS USED IN THE ABRASIVE ULTRASONIC MACHINING. KEY WORDS: ABRASIVE ULTRASONIC MACHINING, TOOL WEAR, WORK HARDENING.
