 Title:
AN APPROACH OF FLANK WEAR BEHAVIOR AND TOOL LIFE IN STEEL WORKPIECES ENDMILLING WITH CEMENTED CARBIDE AND CORONITE ENDMILLS

Summary :
ABSTRACT. AMONG THE DIFFERENT MACHINING PROCESSES USED IN MECHANICAL INDUSTRIES FOR PART MANUFACTURING, THE MILLING PROCESS IS OUTSTANDING, DUE HIGH FLEXIBILITY AND HIGH CHIP REMOVAL RATE. HOWEVER, IT IS ONE OF THE MOST COMPLEX PROCESSES, DUE TO SEVERAL FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE ITS RESULTS. THE TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE MACHINING FIELD AND THE DIFFERENT NEEDS CREATE BY THE SEVERAL KINDS OF MATERIALS TO BE CUT, FORCED THE CREATION OF A LARGE VARIETY OF CUTTING TOOLS AND TOOL MATERIALS. AMONG THESE NEW TOOL MATERIALS IS CORONITE, WHICH IS A MATERIAL THAT HAS INTERMEDIARY PROPERTIES BETWEEN CEMENTED CARBIDE AND HIGH SPEED STEEL. THEREFORE, IT IS POSSIBLE TO USE INTERMEDIARY CUTTING SPEEDS WHEN USING CORONITE. NOWADAYS, WITH THE HIGH RPM OF THE MODERN MACHINE TOOLS IT IS POSSIBLE TO USE CEMENTED CARBIDE MILLING CUTTERS OF SMALL DIAMETERS (SMALLER THAN 20 MM) AND, THEREFORE, A GOOD SURFACE FINISH CAN BE OBTAINED. THE MAIN GOAL OF THIS WORK IS TO COMPARE TOOL LIFE OF CEMENTED CARBIDE AND CORONITE MILLING CUTTERS. TO REACH THIS GOAL, SEVERAL GROOVES WERE MILLED IN A 1045 STEEL WORKPIECE, UNDER THREE DIFFERENT CONDITIONS FOR BOTH TOOL MATERIALS IN SUCH A WAY TO ANALYSE THE INFLUENCE OF CUTTING SPEED, FEED VELOCITY AND FEED PER TOOTH ON TOOL WEAR AND TOOL LIFE. THE MOST IMPORTANT CONCLUSIONS OF THIS WORK ARE: FOR THE CORONITE ENDMILL BOTH, SPEED AND FEED VELOCITY HAVE STRONG INFLUENCE ON TOOL WEAR AND TOOL LIFE. FOR THE CEMENTED CARBIDE CUTTER, IT CAN BE SAID THAT NONE OF THESE PARAMETERS INFLUENCED TOOL WEAR AND TOOL LIFE, AT LEAST IN THE LEVELS USED IN THIS WORK. MOREOVER, CORONITE CUTTERS WORKING WITH CUTTING SPEED AROUND 172 M/MIN AND CEMENTED CARBIDE CUTTERS WORKING WITH CUTTING SPEEDS AROUND 300 M/MIN, PRESENTED VERY LOW LEVELS OF TOOOL WEAR AND, CONSEQUENTLY LONG TOOL LIFE, REACHING AROUND 10 M OF CUT (FEED LENGHT). KEY-WORDS: ENDMILLING, CORONITE, FLANK WEAR, TOOL LIFE.
