 Title:
EVALUATION OF PLASMA BREAKTHROUGH TENDENCY IN MEMBRANES FOR CARDIOPULMONARY BYPASS

Summary :
THE PURPOSE OF THIS WORK CONCERNS AN "IN VITRO" EVALUATION OF PLASMA BREAKTHROUGH TENDENCY IN MEMBRANE OXYGENATORS MANUFACTURED WITH TWO TYPES OF HOLLOW FIBERS. TEN OXYGENATORS PRODUCED WITH MICROPOROUS POLYPROPYLENE HOLLOW FIBERS WERE EVALUATED, 5 PRODUCED WITH FIBERS TYPE A, WHOSE FEATURES ARE: INTERNAL DIAMETERS = 305MM, THICKNESS=28 MM, PORE MEDIUM SIZE = 0.065MM AND POROSITY = 40%; AND 5 OXYGENATORS MANUFACTURED WITH FIBERS TYPE B WHOSE FEATURES ARE: INTERNAL DIAMETER=400MM, THICKNESS=30MM, PORE MEDIUM SIZE = 0.030MM AND POROSITY=40%. THE OXYGENATORS PRODUCED WITH THE HOLLOW FIBER TYPE A DIDN T SHOW PLASMA BREAKTHROUGH DURING THE PERIOD OF TEST AND 2 OXYGENATORS PRODUCED WITH THE FIBER TYPE B SHOWED THE PLASMA BREAKTHROUGH AFTER 5.5 HOURS AND 6 HOURS OF TEST. ALL OXYGENATORS EVALUATED SHOWED APPROPRIATED GAS TRANSFER .THE RESULTS INDICATE THAT HOLLOW FIBERS WITH MEDIUM PORE SIZE OF 0.030MM HAVE LOWER TENDENCY TO PLASMA BREAKTHROUGH THAN FIBERS WITH MEDIUM PORE SIZE OF 0.065MM, WITHOUT DECREASING OF OXYGENATION CAPACITY. IN CONCLUSION, THE FIBERS TYPE B CAN BE CONSIDERED MORE APPROPRIATE FOR USE IN CARDIOPULMONARY BYPASS. KEY WORDS: CARDIOPULMONARY BYPASS, OXYGENATORS, HEAT EXCHANGERS, PLASMA BREAKTHROUGH AND MEMBRANES.
