 Title:
DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNIQUES TO QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF FRACTURE PROFILES BY VERTICAL SECTION METHOD

Summary :
ABSTRACT. THIS PAPER PURPOSE TO SOURCE A PROCEDURE TO ESTIMATE THE REMOVED THICKNESS OF MATERIAL LAYER THROUGH THE VERTICAL SECTION METHOD, THAT WILL BE USED FOR QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF FRACTURE PROFILES, ACCORDING TO EGF P1-87D PROCEDURE, FOR THE DETERMINATION OF TOPOGRAPHIC BEHAVIOR OF FRACTURE SURFACE. THE TECHNIQUE CONSISTS ON METALLOGRAPHIC PREPARATION OF SAMPLES FOR IMAGE PROCESSING AND ANALYSIS. THERE WAS NOT CHEMICAL ETCHING ON THE METALLIC ALLOY SAMPLES TO GUARANTEE THE CONTRAST OF IMAGES. AN OPAQUE MOUNTING RESIN WAS USED IN THE SAME WAY, SINCE THE MATERIAL HAVE ADEQUATE HARDNESS AND PLANE EDGES. THE IMAGES WERE OBTAINED THROUGH SUCCESSIVE POLISHING. THE IMAGE PROCESSING AND THE CALCULATION OF SPACING BETWEEN SUCCESSIVE PROFILES WAS ESTIMATED BY IDENTATION MADE BY VICKERS HARDNESS. THE ROUTINE WAS WRITTEN AT MACRO PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE OF SCION IMAGE BETA 3B PROGRAM ( BASED ON NIH IMAGE FOR MACINTOSH MODIFIED FOR MS WINDOWS 95). THIS TECHNIQUE SHOWED OFF TO BE ADEQUATED, BECAUSE REVEALED GOOD AND REPRODUCIBLE RESULTS. IT IS NECESSARY THE ATTENTION ABOUT METALLOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUES TO AVOID THE EXCESSIVE USE OF PROCESSING TOLLS AND TO ASSURE THE INTEGRITY OF PROFILES. KEYWORDS: VERTICAL SECTION, METALLOGRAPHY, IMAGE PROCESSING.
