 Title:
CHARACTERIZATION OF LUBRICATING OIL USING ULTRASOUND

Summary :
ABSTRACT. IN MANY INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES IT IS NECESSARY TO MEASURE CHARACTERISTICS OF PURE LIQUIDS, MIXTURES OR EMULSIONS, SUCH AS THE PARTICLE SIZE AND CONCENTRATION. AS AN EXAMPLE, IN HYDROELECTRIC GENERATION PLANTS IT IS NECESSARY TO MONITOR THE WATER CONTENT IN LUBRICATING OIL. IN THIS WORK, IT IS PRESENTED A METHOD FOR LIQUID CHARACTERIZATION USING AN ULTRASONIC MEASUREMENT CELL WITH A DOUBLE-ELEMENT TRANSDUCER, THAT ELIMINATES THE DIFFRACTION LOSS, AND OPERATES IN THE FREQUENCY RANGE 2.25 TO 10MHZ. WATER IN OIL SAMPLES WITH CONCENTRATIONS IN THE RANGE 0 TO 5% IN VOLUME WERE PREPARED, AND WERE MEASURED THE PROPAGATION VELOCITY, DENSITY AND ATTENUATION COEFFICIENT. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT, AT THE FREQUENCIES OF 5 AND 10MHZ, IT IS POSSIBLE TO CHARACTERIZE THE DIFFERENT SAMPLE CONCENTRATIONS USING THE PROPAGATION VELOCITY AS A PARAMETER. KEYWORDS: ULTRASOUND, LIQUIDS CHARACTERIZATION, LUBRICATING OIL.
