COMPARISON OF BOUNDARY ELEMENT AND FINITE ELEMENT COMPUTER SIMULATIONS FOR TWO-DIMENSIONAL TRANSIENT DIFFUSION

Summary :
COMPARISON OF BOUNDARY ELEMENT AND FINITE ELEMENT COMPUTER SIMULATIONS FOR TWO-DIMENSIONAL TRANSIENT DIFFUSION ABSTRACT: THE PRESENT WORK PRESENTS RESULTS OBTAINED USING THE BOUNDARY ELEMENT METHOD (BEM) APPLIED TO TWO-DIMENSIONAL TRANSIENT DIFFUSION, AND SHOWS A COMPARISON WITH RESULTS OBTAINED USING FINITE ELEMENTS. BEM IS APPLIED TO TRANSIENT PROBLEMS GOVERNED BY THE DIFFUSION EQUATION USING TIME DEPENDENT FUNDAMENTAL SOLUTIONS WITH CONSTANT ELEMENTS FOR BOTH SPACE AND TIME. THE TIME-STEPPING PROCEDURE TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE POTENTIAL AND ITS NORMAL DERIVATIVE AT EARLIER TIMES THROUGH INFLUENCE MATRICES. USING FINITE ELEMENTS THE DOMAIN WAS DISCRETIZED USING LINEAR TRIANGULAR ELEMENTS WITH FINITE DIFFERENCES ADOPTED FOR TIME STEPPING. THE TIME STEPPING WHEN USING THE FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS IS DONE STARTING FROM THE KNOW POTENTIAL IN THE DOMAIN AT T=0 WITH BOUNDARY VALUES (EITHER U ITS NORMAL DERIVATIVE) PRESCRIBED IN TIME. VALUES OF U IN THE NEXT TIME STEP ARE THEN COMPUTED AND USED AS INITIAL VALUES FOR THE TIME STEP AND SO ON. RESULTS FOR THE NUMERICAL SOLUTIONS OBTAINED USING BOTH METHOD FOR THE EXAMPLE SHOWN ARE IN VERY GOOD AGREEMENT. KEY-WORDS:BOUNDARY ELEMENTS, DIFFUSION S EQUATION, TRANSIENT DIFFUSION.
