Abstract
Steel is present in everyday life in many different ways. Due to the diversity of its applications, it became necessary to characterize the material, as well as the search for alternatives to reduce production costs, guarantee economic viability and gain competitiveness in the market. In the case of steel, issues involving the reduction of consumption of raw materials and environmental impacts are always on the agenda, constantly needing innovations in the sector. The heat treatment process called quenching performed on steels, aims to increase the hardness and resistance of the steels, through the formation of the martensitic microstructure. The present work aims to build a low cost Jominy device for conducting hardenability tests. Tests were carried out on steel samples of type AISI/SAE 4140, with the intention of comparing the values in the literature with the results obtained in the tests. The project is important because it involves the construction of new equipment for an educational institution, encouraging the development of future academic productions using this equipment. The built device proved to be functional and adaptable. Along with the methodology applied in carrying out the tests, it was possible to obtain results in accordance with the ASTM A255 standard.
