Abstract
Traditional fusion-based welding methods for welded joint production can lead to issues related to the high temperatures achieved and defects such as porosity, lack of penetration, amongst others. On the other hand, friction stir welding (FSW) has been gaining attention among modern joining technologies due to its numerous advantages and applicability in the industry. FSW is technology highlighted for joining a large variety of materials, being considered "green" due to its energy efficiency, environmental benefits, and versatility. Thus, this work focuses on evaluating residual stresses in welded joints of AA 5083 produced by TIG and FSW processes. Surface residual stress measurements were performed through X-ray diffraction (XRD). Defects were observed in the TIG joint as well as tensile residual stresses up to 160 MPa.
