Abstract
. This research is focused in the project and implementation of a bench experiment for water desalination using air gap membrane distillation (AGMD). The experiments will serve to further understand how the different transport phenomena involved and their interactions result in the quantity of water produced. The main final objective is the evaluation of which among the heat and mass transfer mechanisms poses the main barrier for significant performance gains in AGMD systems, enabling future research focused in intensifying processes that limit the most water productivity. In this report, a design of an experimental bench and the preliminary steps to acquire equipment and materials and assemble the apparatus. One of the main principles taking into account for the design of the experiment is versatility, either geometric or in terms of configuration. To warrant the needed flexibility, the desalination modules are conceived using computational design applications and fabricated through additive manufacturing using 3D printing by fused deposition modeling (FDP). Furthermore, the selected instruments and equipment already available are presented.
